Yuzawa Kogen is the site of one of Yuzawa's original ski slopes. It is right in the center of Yuzawa town with a few slopes at the bottom and a large ropeway that takes you to the slopes at the top of the mountain. From the top it links up to GALA Yuzawa via a horizontal gondola as part of the 3 mountain area.
The slopes at the bottom of Yuzawa Kogen Resort are right next to the road through the town and are known as the Nunoba area. Directly behind the base building is the Family Ski Slope. This slope is possibly the most gentle ski slope in Yuzawa so is a great location for a ski lesson in English. It is skier-only, so no snowboarders. Further along the road there is another lift which offers more challenging runs on either side. This does allow snowboarding.
The gondola ride to the top of the mountain is a tourist attraction all year round. Many non-skiers ride up in winter for the great panoramic views of the mountains and the valley below, and enjoy lunch at the restaurant at the top. The top of the resort has a few more runs. Most of them are a bit on the steep side but there is one great long beginners run down from the top.
Yuzawa Kogen has a couple of play areas for children - one at the bottom and one at the top of the ropeway.
There is a free shuttle bus that links NASPA Ski Garden, GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen, along with many of the hotel areas in Yuzawa town. The ease of access and the fun Family Slope make it a good choice for the first time ski lesson in Yuzawa.
