01 Oct Coming back to Japan – Winter 2022 / 2023
Finally, after a long wait, we are looking forward to welcoming you all back to Yuzawa for Winter 2022 / 2023!
We were delighted to see the news of border restrictions being massively eased from October 11th 2022. It is “all systems go” now for this coming winter, and after two years of heavy snowfall with only domestic guests here to enjoy it, we are hoping that the weather systems cooperate to welcome everyone back with another snowy winter. The long range forecast is looking like it should be similar to the last two years, so fingers crossed. (And Mt. Fuji has already received its first dusting of snow – a little earlier than usual.)
Fingers crossed that the airlines can keep up with the demand for people wanting to get back to the Japanese snow. Once you arrive in Japan, access to Yuzawa is incredibly easy. Just an 80 minute bullet train ride from Tokyo Station to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The route is also covered by several of the great value JR Passes, including the Tokyo Wide Pass which is valid for travel to either Echigo-Yuzawa or Gala Stations. This makes Yuzawa an easy destination for a day trip if you are short on time.
There are masses of accommodation options in Yuzawa that cater to all levels. If you are unsure of where to stay we are happy to advise. There are ski-in, ski-out options on the slopes or plenty of places to stay in and around the various parts of Yuzawa. Wherever you end up, the famed Japanese hospitality and delicious food should make for a fantastic stay. Do remember though that locals travelling to the area can make weekends and national holidays very busy here (and more expensive), so if your schedule is flexible weekdays can often be the best choice.
Rental equipment is easily arranged with rental shops in the resorts, at some hotels, or from independent shops in the centre of town or close to base areas of some resorts. The rental shops in town provide a free shuttle service to some resorts which makes it very easy to get around. There are also plenty of resort shuttle buses if you have your own equipment.
After two years off the snow most people will be a bit rusty in terms of technique. Snow sports are much like riding a bike and you are likely to pick things up again very quickly. A lesson will help you get straight back into the groove, bring your level higher than before, and most importantly, make sure you have the skills to enjoy your time on the slopes fully. Ski and snowboarding are all about enjoyment. Our team have been chosen for their ability to pass on their passion for their sport, and every one of them loves helping their guests improve on the snow. We are determined to keep the standard of instruction really high in this area, as well as keeping it affordable. Unfortunately at some resort we have to charge a higher price in line with other schools, but again, if you have bit of flexibility we can recommend some great resorts for all levels so you can take advantage of the best value ski and snowboard lessons. Again we have busy periods so for lessons, booking in advance is highly recommended.
One other thing you may have been missing for the last two winters is the onsen. Everyone here is a huge fan of a long soak in the hot spring waters after a fun day on the slopes. It is the perfect way to relax and unwind, ready for more skiing and snowboarding the next day.
We are always happy to help with information for your winter vacation and any questions you may have about a ski or snowboard trip. You can also check out our blog which has lots of information about the Yuzawa area and the lesson we offer. Or find us on Instagram or Facebook too.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
