Ishiuchi Maruyama Resort Overview

Ishiuchi Maruyama is in Minami Uonuma city, just on the other side of the boundary where Yuzawa ends. It looks like a triangle with its base along the Route 17 main throughfare along the valley floor.

It is one of the most popular locations for ski and snowboard lessons with Snow Country Instructors. It has 3 base areas called Hatsukaishi, Chuo (which is the central area and where you can find the main Resort Center), and Kanko (or North area.) As it has different entry points you do want to be very sure of where you are going if you are meeting your instructor! Yuzawa rental shops that provide a shuttle service usually prefer to drop at the Hatsukaishi area as it is closer to Yuzawa. There are shuttle buses that run to the different areas too.

Both Hatsukaishi and the Chuo/Resort Center entrances have good beginner terrain so are the best for lower levels. The Kanko Area is more for advanced riders. We usually meet lesson participants at the Hatsukaishi Ticket Counter for lessons starting in Hatsukaishi, or at the base of the Sunrise Express for lessons starting in the Chuo/Resort Center Area. Other meeting and drop off points can be arranged if required.

What makes Ishiuchi stand out is not only the variety of slopes and the skiable connection to its neighboring resort Gala Yuzawa, but also and most uniquely the sheer variety of food options in the ski area. From Italian food to Austrian delicacies and of course all the Japanese classics there are over 20 restaurants so you can eat somewhere different every meal and explore the different cuisines. There are also some good ski-in, ski-out accommodation options if you want to stay on (or next to) the slopes.

Ishiuchi hosts a variety of slopes suitable for all levels which makes it a good choice for groups with mixed abilities; the more advanced can go off to explore the challenging terrain while the beginners cruise around on the easier slopes. It is also well known for its park features and competitions. There is at least one set of jumps and rails available at all times, and when the snow has accumulated enough over the winter Ishiuchi hosts one of just a few monster halfpipes in Japan, where you can see impressive riders going big. If you are interested in jumps and tricks get a lesson with one of our experienced freestyle coaches. If there is fresh snow there are also some steeper runs which are lots of fun in the powder.

For the non-skiers it is possible to ride the Sunrise Express lift up to the middle area of the resort and use the sledding park, rent a dome tent to enjoy the view, or have lunch in one of the restaurants on the snow.

Ishiuchi Maruyama is a fun resort with lots to offer all levels and ages, and is a great resort for both skiing and snowboarding lessons.
