Spring is here and resorts around Japan are closing. The season continues for a while longer here in Niigata though, and we have had a couple of snowfalls in April to top up the spring snow. Spring skiing in Yuzawa often sees nicer weather than mid-winter, though the snow tends to be softer and slushier.
Kandatsu is supposed to be open until April 21st – http://www.kandatsu.com/
Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort is planning to be open until May 6th – https://gala.co.jp/winter/
Tashiro Ski Area is also planning to be open until May 6th and Kagura/Mitsumata will try to keep going until May 26th – http://www2.princehotels.co.jp/ski/kagura/
Okutadami Maruyama is also a fun option for a day trip though is a little further away from Yuzawa.
Conditions can vary at this time of year but you can always message us if you would like more details. We have ski and snowboard instructors in Yuzawa giving lessons until the last resort closes. It is a great time to be out on the slopes, usually quiet, and often with discounts on lift tickets. The local rental shops who provide the free shuttle service to the open resorts are also operating until the last day of the season, and accommodations are easy to book, with a wide range to suit all tastes. We can help with these arrangements too.
There is a long Golden Week this year so if you are looking for something different to do come up to the mountains to ski or snowboard!
